Marcia Ranglin-Vassell, a Progressive Democrat from House District 5 in Providence, is currently in her second term as a state representative. Born and raised in Jamaica, Representative Ranglin-Vassell is the first Jamaican-American to serve in the Rhode Island State legislature. She is also the first Jamaican to serve in elected office in Rhode Island.

Bill would require insurance, Medicaid coverage for doula services
Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell (D-Dist. 5, Providence) has submitted legislation (2019-H 5609) to make doula services eligible for reimbursement through private insurance and Medicaid programs. The bill’s purpose is to achieve healthier outcomes for women and babies, particularly for black women, who experience significantly higher rates of death or injury during childbirth. Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence) intends to introduce the bill in the Senate.

PROVIDENCE — As the number of women elected to the General Assembly hits a new high and the House prepares to vote on enshrining abortion rights in state law, progressive Rhode Island Democrats released a “Women’s Economic Justice Platform” on Wednesday that includes the latest effort to erase the gender pay gap.
“If we are really serious about economic equality for women and people of color, if we are serious about supporting working families, it is far past time for ending the practices that perpetuate the wage gap,” said Rep. Susan Donovan, House sponsor of the pay equity bill.
